With more than 100,000 children still waiting for a bed of their own, the scale of child bedlessness in America remains a quiet crisis that rarely makes headlines. A national nonprofit dedicated to changing that reality just took a significant step forward, adding ten new chapters and reshuffling leadership in ten others during a two-day training intensive in Utah.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a leading nonprofit focused on building and delivering beds to kids in need, hosted its quarterly chapter training on October 9-10 in Lehi, Utah. The session brought together 38 volunteers who are now equipped to lead local efforts in their communities, ensuring that no child has to sleep on the floor.

“Every new chapter means more kids in more towns going to sleep in a bed of their own,” said Jordan Allen, CEO of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. “These volunteers are stepping up for the children in their own communities, and we’re proud to give them the training and support to turn that commitment into beds, better nights, and brighter futures — for kids who have waited far too long.”

For families living below the poverty line, a bed is often a luxury rather than a given. Kids in these households frequently end up on hard floors, crowded couches, or other makeshift sleeping arrangements. The consequences go beyond discomfort: a good night’s sleep is essential for a child’s healthy development, affecting physical growth, cognitive function, and emotional stability. Poverty should never dictate where a child rests their head.

Since its founding in 2012, SHP has delivered more than 400,000 beds to children in need — a figure that underscores just how widespread the problem is. Currently, SHP chapters serve over 30% of the U.S. population, leaving vast areas still unreached. In 2026 alone, the organization has launched 68 new chapters, inching closer to the day when no child sleeps on the floor.

The training program is no small undertaking. Chapter leaders — including Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Core Team members — participate in a two-day immersive experience covering leadership and management, fundraising and development, marketing strategy, and hands-on bed-building techniques. This preparation is designed to give local leaders the confidence and tools they need to run their nonprofits effectively.

The numbers from 2026 so far are striking: SHP volunteers have built 83,000 beds and delivered more than 68,000 to children, contributing over 475,000 hours of service in the process.

“Every child deserves a safe, warm bed to sleep in tonight. For too many kids in crisis and in foster care, that’s not the reality. Sleep in Heavenly Peace exists to fix that,” said Trevor Booker, president of the new SHP-FL, Polk County chapter. “Our faith-based nonprofit, Family Made Whole, is officially partnering with SHP to provide beds and give families the dignity they deserve. We’re excited to launch this new chapter in Lakeland and Polk County.”

With more than 400 chapters and growing, SHP continues to expand its reach. The newly established chapters — including four in Texas — will serve the following communities:

  • Calhoun County, Alabama
  • Prescott, Arizona
  • Vilonia, Arkansas
  • Polk County, Florida
  • West Branch, Michigan
  • Chenango County, New York
  • Galveston, Texas
  • Navarro County, Texas
  • Palo Pinto, Texas
  • Rains/Hunt County, Texas
