When a Houston moving company earns a spot on Forbes Advisor’s curated list, it’s worth a closer look — especially when the founder says his 12 years as a police officer gave him an inside view of exactly what can go wrong in the industry. That background, he says, is baked into how the business operates today.
I wanted Power Movers to be a Houston moving company that Houstonians could trust without a doubt. My 12 years with the Houston Police Department showed me exactly how important trust is to customers.”— Gary Williams, Founder of Power Movers
Power Movers, a Houston moving company, is featured in Forbes Advisor's "Best Moving Companies in Houston, TX" list, published Aug. 27, 2026. The company holds a 4.8 Forbes Advisor Rating.
Gary Williams, who spent 12 years with the Houston Police Department’s Central Division — covering the Heights, Montrose, and River Oaks — founded the company. Power Movers now boasts more than 1,000 customer reviews.
"I was blown away. I had no idea we had been recognized by Forbes," Williams said. The recognition became tangible when a customer told the company it had been chosen specifically because of the Forbes Advisor listing, he said.
The seed for the business was planted in the complaints he handled as an officer. Williams said he responded to five or six moving-related calls involving payment disputes, damaged belongings that went uncompensated, and theft reports — including customers missing items such as rings.
One call in particular stuck with him: a couple moving from out of state to Houston was quoted about $3,500 in their contract but faced a final bill of roughly $7,500. They were told their belongings would not be released until they paid the difference, Williams said.
"That is a substantial amount of money to have to come up with unexpectedly, and the situation stuck with me," Williams said.
Many of these calls were treated as civil matters because they involved contracts or payment disputes. "Our hands were often tied," he said. "We could not simply arrest someone; we had to be able to prove theft or fraud. Even when a situation looked suspicious, proving it was another matter."
Williams had no prior moving industry experience. He launched Power Movers as a side business to supplement his officer’s income. About three months passed between the initial idea and the first job, during which he sourced a truck, created the logo and designs, and had the vehicle wrapped. Early jobs were mostly booked on weekends when he was off duty.
Finding customers proved the toughest hurdle in year one. But the first client was extremely happy with the service, Williams said, and that feedback convinced him the company was the right call.
When hiring, Williams said he sought people with clean backgrounds, good reputations, and a professional appearance. "Integrity was my number-one priority. I knew how important it was to have people customers could trust inside their homes," he said.
His police training shaped the company’s customer service philosophy. "The police academy is strict, and that experience influenced our manner, discipline, and approach to customer service," Williams said. "Putting customers first helped differentiate us from other companies."
Early contracts were handwritten and signed in person. Today, much of that process is automated, Williams said, but he adds: "The most important part is still human contact and customer service."
Power Movers’ client roster has included Tesla, Lululemon, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The company’s first Rodeo gig involved moving out what was described as the first sit-down restaurant in Rodeo history. At the event’s close, the crew packed glasses, plates, and silverware, broke down tables onto pallets, and transported everything from the grounds to the restaurant’s warehouse. Power Movers has handled that move every year since.
"The Rodeo is one of Houston’s biggest annual events, so being able to take our company into that environment and be part of it was huge for us," Williams said.
Williams said he cannot say whether moving fraud has risen or fallen in Houston because he lacks the statistics. Still, he says customers regularly describe bad experiences with other movers.
His advice for anyone hiring movers: check references and background, read customer reviews, and look for a team with documented experience and verified reviews.
"Reviews matter, especially when a company has more than 1,100 of them," Williams said.

Why it matters: Williams’ story shows how direct exposure to an industry’s worst practices can inform a better business model — one built on transparency, verified reviews, and a customer-first approach. For Houstonians facing the daunting task of choosing a mover, the Forbes Advisor recognition offers an independently vetted starting point, and Williams’ background provides a layer of accountability that is rare in the field.
