Serving as the premier event on the ARWS European calendar, the Montane Adventure Race will provide a grueling, high‑prestige battleground where the continent’s top teams must navigate a complex mix of wild forests, coastline, and open water while moving through centuries of history.
Although the physical demands of the race will be extreme, the event is uniquely shaped as a journey through Danish heritage, turning a standard competition into an expedition of discovery.
Presenting Sjælland and Denmark to the World
The 2026 Championship represents a refined fusion of world‑class sport and Danish national heritage. Backed by Sport Event Denmark and Destination Sjælland, the event uses the region’s cultural resources to craft a race of deep significance. By weaving UNESCO World Heritage sites and historic landmarks into the route, the championship offers a story that goes far beyond athletic competition.

The event is headlined by title sponsor Montane, a brand known for the lightweight, breathable gear needed for non‑stop endurance racing. It also receives support from FB Gruppen A/S to handle complex logistics, along with a range of other local and regional partners, venues, and sponsors. Race headquarters will be located at the Kobæk Strand Hotel & Konference centre, where all teams will be housed at the start and finish of the race.
A Masterclass in Event Design
The creator of this ambitious journey is Race Director Lars Bukkehave. With 18 years of experience in race organization and ARWS refereeing, and a personal record of 120 races in 30 countries, Bukkehave is known for course designs that are mentally engaging as well as physically demanding. His reputation for “creative suffering” is legendary; past participants have faced mind‑bending challenges such as complex mazes and high‑intensity “Navy Seal” tests. This history of innovation guarantees a route that will surprise even the most seasoned veterans.
The 2026 course is a punishing 19‑stage odyssey with a projected winning time of 35–37 hours, though teams are allowed a maximum of 48 hours to finish. With 11 Transition Areas (TAs) between disciplines spread along the route, “slick transitions” will be crucial for a fast race.
The Sjælland landscape has been turned into a series of technical challenges designed to keep surprising and testing the teams:
Coastal Challenge: A 4‑hour technical coasteering and caving stage will force teams to scramble and swim along the jagged coastline. It is a super‑technical discipline where the rule is simple: “Run what you can, climb or swim the rest.”
Vertical Tests: Teams will spend an intensive 1.5 hours on ropes, including high‑altitude rappelling and specialized “Vertical Orienteering.” This involves technical tree climbing where points are earned far above the forest floor. Petzl is the official ropes and climbing partner, and all specialized climbing gear will be supplied to teams for the vertical stages.
Aquatic Complexity: The water disciplines are multi‑faceted, ranging from a 4‑hour open‑water kayak between islands using a fleet of 100 solo kayaks, to the unique challenge of “canoeing with bikes” on freshwater lakes. Stages 1 and 5 feature open‑water swims where teams must use masks, snorkels, and waterproof lights to locate submerged checkpoints.
Navigational Necessity: The race includes an incredible 147 checkpoints, and stages will require careful map and compass navigation to find them. There will be running, mountain biking, and paddle orienteering, and even the tree‑climbing stage will have a map. A variety of technical maps will be used, along with some historic maps.
The full course and race locations will be revealed only to the teams at the race briefing before the start. The physical challenges set the stage for a showdown among some of the world’s most decorated endurance teams.
An Elite Field and Continental Powerhouses
The competitive stakes are high, as the new European Champions will also earn a direct, guaranteed qualifying spot for the 2027 Adventure Racing World Championship in Croatia. This prize has drawn a formidable international field of 50 teams representing 17 nationalities, including athletes from Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA.
The leaderboard is expected to be dominated by the “Baltic Powerhouse,” with Estonian teams currently holding the top three European rankings in the field. Estonian Ace /La Sportiva are both the world and European #2 ranked team, while their compatriots Õnnevalem and Metsapeatus are #3 and #6 in Europe.
While the Estonians are the favorites, local Danish contenders like Team Aaros (#25 in the World Rankings) and Masanga Racing have a home‑field advantage with their knowledge of the race and the Sjælland terrain.
There is a depth of experience in Danish racing with Team Racing Denmark/High Five, Aaros, and Team Nordisk all past winners of ARWS Expedition races, and many strong young racers also coming up through the Danish youth racing programme. Fifteen of the teams on the start line will be Danish, with the Netherlands fielding 9 teams and France and Estonia 5 each.
A World Class Arena for Adventure
The 2026 Championship marks a significant evolution for the Montane Adventure Race, transitioning from its traditional winter slot to a high‑summer expedition to accommodate the scale and prestige of the European Championship.
