The writer behind One Step Over The Line is now turning his attention to helping fellow true crime podcasters expand their listener base.
Ken Behr operated inside a massive smuggling network for over twenty years before becoming a DEA cooperating witness. Today, he hosts Crime Nightly, a true crime podcast that explores unsolved homicides, missing individuals, and criminal probes at crimenightly.com. Behr intends to use the insights he gained from building Crime Nightly to assist other true crime podcast hosts in growing their own programs.
Behr’s journey into that world began in the 1970s as a teenager working from his mother’s home. What started modestly eventually ballooned into a large-scale smuggling enterprise that Behr managed for more than two decades. During those years, he traveled across the country in a cigarette boat, raced cars, and flew on private jets, collaborating with some of the world’s most notorious smugglers and crossing paths with everyone from Hollywood celebrities to killers.
Confronted with a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison, Behr opted to become a DEA cooperating source. He later chronicled that chapter of his life in the memoir One Step Over The Line, a title borrowed from the 1970s tune “One Toke Over the Line.” The book, Behr’s first published work, recounts both his personal story and the smuggling culture of South Florida during that period.

In the book’s author’s note, Behr also discusses coping with post-traumatic stress related to those decades—an experience that took him by surprise, he says, after years of believing PTSD was something that only affected other people.
Behr’s time inside federal investigations and his direct exposure to large-scale trafficking now inform his work behind the microphone. He launched Crime Nightly to apply that perspective to cold cases, missing person inquiries, and conversations with researchers and formerly incarcerated individuals.
“We built Crime Nightly and grew our audience fast, and that experience is exactly what we want to bring to other true crime podcasters who are trying to grow their own shows,” said Ken Behr, host of Crime Nightly.
