The Carpenter Contractor Trust (CCT) has unveiled its most recent Contractor Spotlight video, which features Railroad Construction Co.—a union-signatory general contractor based in Paterson, N.J., that has been in operation for a century. The video provides an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse of the Purple Line rail tunnel beneath Silver Spring, Maryland, where the company’s union workforce is tackling the project’s most demanding tasks.
The Purple Line in Silver Spring, Md., is a brand-new 16-mile light-rail system being developed by the Maryland Transit Administration. It will link Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park, and New Carrollton. While not part of the Washington, D.C., metro network, it will connect with the Red, Green, and Orange lines, as well as MARC and Amtrak services.

In its contractor video, CCT takes viewers below ground to witness union carpenters and heavy-equipment operators pouring concrete at the Manchester interlocking—a complex junction where multiple tracks cross and converge. This section is the most intricate trackwork on the entire Purple Line project. Workers carefully embed rails in concrete while surveyors ensure perfect level and alignment before finishing the surface to a smooth, precise fit.
The spotlight also underscores the importance of on-site apprenticeship. First-year carpenter apprentices are acquiring hands-on experience with formwork and heavy-highway construction—skills that will serve them throughout their careers. Safety, described as the top priority for both the carpenters’ union and Railroad Construction Co., is integrated into every facet of the operation.
