When winter hits Louisville, a coat can be the difference between suffering and survival — which is why a local law firm is putting its weight behind a community drive that operates on a simple, radical rule: give, don’t sell.
Emery Law Office Proudly Supports Louisville’s 16th Annual Free Coat Exchange on Nov 27, 2026, Inviting the Community To Share Warmth and Give Back Together
At our firm, you are a member of our family, and the Free Coat Exchange reflects that same spirit of unconditional community care…”— Melissa Emery, Esq.
With colder months closing in, Emery Law Office, a personal injury firm rooted in the Louisville area, has stepped forward as a supporter of the 16th Annual Free Coat Exchange, scheduled for Friday, November 27, 2026. The event runs on a strict "give, not sell" principle — a fully volunteer-powered effort that distributes winter coats to residents in need while never asking for or accepting a single dollar.
Everything about the Free Coat Exchange hinges on goodwill and neighborly bonds. In 2025, the effort rallied 45 drop-off points and 9 giveaway sites across the city, and organizers are pushing to widen that footprint in 2026 so that even more families can stay warm.
For Melissa Emery, Esq., the firm’s founder and managing attorney, standing by local families is inseparable from her legal work, which centers on helping people rebuild after hardship.
"I became a lawyer because I am called to help others, and that calling extends far beyond the courtroom," says Melissa Emery. "At our firm, you are a member of our family, and the Free Coat Exchange reflects that same spirit of unconditional community care. It’s about giving what you can and sharing warmth with our neighbors in a way that preserves everyone’s dignity."
The event’s real power shows up in the stories of those who lend a hand. At a past exchange, two men experiencing homelessness showed up early to unload bags, arrange tables, and sort coats. After hours of work, they were offered breakfast and coffee.
Later, when one of them found a warm jumpsuit he was excited to wear, he spotted another man arrive empty-handed. Without a second thought, he gave the jumpsuit away, saying the newcomer needed it more. That chain of giving, choice, and mutual care is the heartbeat of the Free Coat Exchange.
Residents, local groups, and businesses are all being urged to get involved. Taking part is easy and requires no formal meetings or heavy email chains. A business can become a drop-off site simply by placing a collection box with a yellow poster, spreading the word through email and social media, and enjoying the low-cost reward of community service. Any coats left over are passed along to local non-profits that operate with the same community-first outlook.
If you have a coat you don’t need — or know someone who needs one they don’t have — you’re invited to participate. Why it matters: This event shows how a simple, no-cost gesture — donating a coat — can build a cycle of dignity and mutual aid in a city. When a law firm backs a drive like this, it signals that community care isn’t just a seasonal slogan, but a year-round commitment to neighborly support.
